School of Materials Science and Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology, formerly known as department of mechanical engineering of Beijing Institute of Mining and Technology, was founded in 1954. There are machinery manufacturing teaching and research group and metallographic heat treatment casting laboratory in the department. 1978 The school moved to Xuzhou, and the teaching and research section of metal materials and heat treatment was established in the mechanical department. 1980, the first undergraduate enrollment of metal materials and heat treatment. 1996 set up the school of mechanical and electrical engineering, and set up the department of materials engineering on the basis of the teaching and research section of metal materials and heat treatment. In 2000, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was renamed as the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Materials Engineering, which further highlighted the position of materials discipline in the overall development of the school.

In order to adapt to the development of materials science and personnel training, in February, 2003, the College of Materials Science and Engineering was established on the basis of the Department of Materials Engineering and the Reliability Research Office of the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Academician Xue Qunji, a famous expert in materials and chemistry, is the honorary president of the college, and comes to the school every semester to guide the discipline construction, postgraduate training, scientific research and teaching. There are 56 faculty members and 44 full-time teachers, including professors 12 and associate professors 17, accounting for 66% of the total number of teachers. Among them, there are 7 doctoral tutors, 46 master tutors (including 6 outside the hospital), 37 with doctoral degrees, and all young teachers under the age of 35 have master's degrees or above.
