Cai Dongfan (1877 ~ 1945) was born in Linpu (now Xiaoshan) of Yinshan County in Qing Dynasty. 14 years old, a scholar, went to Beijing to take the exam, was listed as an excellent tribute, and was appointed as an alternate magistrate in Fujian. Dissatisfied with the bad habits of officialdom, he claimed to be sick a few months later and returned to his hometown. After the Revolution of 1911, he taught in Hangzhou and Shaoxing successively.

From 19 16 to 1926, with 10 years of painstaking efforts and amazing perseverance, Cai Dongfan successively completed the pre-Han (including Qin), post-Han, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and Republic of China. Together with the Romance of the Queen Mother of the West and the Romance of Historical Dynasties, a total of 7.24 million words of popular historical masterpieces were written in 13, and their contents spanned a long time, with many characters and huge articles, making them the most historical romances. Known as "a generation of historians, a thousand years of magic pen."
