The symbol of the change of historical dynasties
The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms refers not to a dynasty, but to a special historical period. The Five Dynasties refers to the regime change in the later Liang Dynasty, the later Tang Dynasty, the later Jin Dynasty, the later Han Dynasty and the last Friday. The Ten Kingdoms refers to the ten separatist regimes that appeared one after another outside the Five Dynasties: Pre-Shu, Post-Shu, Wu, Southern Tang, wuyue, Fujian, Chu, Southern Han, Nanping (namely Jingnan) and Northern Han, collectively referred to as the Ten Kingdoms. As for the fixed number of years of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, it is said that the Northern Song Dynasty perished in 979 AD, so the historical period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is 907-979 AD. On the other hand, the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms existed from 907 to 960.

Five Dynasties and Ten Countries, sometimes called Five Dynasties, are collectively called Five Dynasties and Ten Countries. Generally speaking, it is a historical period from Zhu Wen's destruction of the Tang Dynasty in 907 to Zhao Kuangyin's establishment of the Northern Song Dynasty in 960. During these 54 years, there have been five dynasties in the Central Plains, namely Liang, Tang, Jin, Han and Friday, which are called "Five Dynasties" in history, later Tang, later Jin, later Han and later Zhou. In addition to these five dynasties, there were more than a dozen separatist regimes, including Houshu, Wu, Nantang, wuyue, Fujian, Chu, Nanhan, Nanping (namely, Jingnan) and Beihan, which appeared one after another or at the same time. These regimes are collectively referred to as the "Ten Kingdoms", that is, the "Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms" in the history of China. The "ten countries" are just called "big", but there are actually many separatist regimes.

The understanding of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is generally divided into narrow and broad interpretations. In a narrow sense, it is generally understood as "Five Dynasties and Ten Countries" itself. In the specific historical application practice, it is often used to refer to this historical period, which makes the positioning and understanding more rigorous. This is a broad understanding.
