In the history of China, locust plagues often occurred. The affected areas are mostly concentrated in Hebei, Henan and Shandong provinces, but also distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui and Hubei provinces. In severe cases, they may be all over the Loess Plateau. According to Deng Yunte's History of Famine in China, the average locust plague occurred every 8.8 years in Qin and Han Dynasties, with 3.5 years in Song Dynasty, 1.6 years in Yuan Dynasty and 2.8 years in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
China didn't know much about locusts in ancient times, so it was called "the god of locusts" and "the mutual transformation between locusts and fish (shrimp)", such as Ya Ya written by Lu Dian in Song Dynasty: "Or, locusts are the transformation of fish eggs". Pan's "Writing Deep Sea": "Some locusts become fish and shrimp". Li Yun's "Taiping Yu Lan" and "Shrimp Gate" record: "Locusts fly into the sea and turn into fish and shrimp." . Li Su's "Seeing Things" records: "When there is a drought, fish and shrimp turn into locusts, so there are many auspicious years for fish." .
