What is the origin of May Day? (short)
May Day International Labor Day originated from the workers' strike in Chicago, USA.

On May 6th, Chicago workers went on strike to implement the eight-hour work system. After a hard and bloody struggle, they finally won. In order to commemorate this great workers' movement, 1889, 14 On July 4th, the socialist congress convened by Marxists all over the world announced that May 1 day would be designated as International Labor Day every year. This decision immediately received a positive response from workers all over the world. On May 1890 and 1 Sunday, the European and American working classes took the lead in taking to the streets, holding grand demonstrations and assemblies to fight for their legitimate rights and interests. From then on, working people from all over the world will gather and March on this day to celebrate and spend a public holiday.

In February of 1949, the Government Affairs Council of the Central People's Government of China made a decision to designate May 1 day as Labor Day every year. After 1989, the State Council basically commended the national model workers and advanced workers every five years, and commended about 3,000 people each time.
