Myanmar itself is a country, referred to as Burma Union. It is a country in Southeast Asia and a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It borders the Andaman Sea in the southwest, India and Bangladesh in the northwest, China in the northeast, Thailand and Laos in the southeast, and Naypyidaw, the capital.
Dispute over the name of Myanmar
Generally speaking, each country has only one official name. When a country announces its name change, other countries will choose to respect its name change will. In Chinese, the name of Myanmar is not controversial, but internationally, the English name of Myanmar is controversial. There are two English names, Myanmar and Burma.
Burma was originally the English name of Myanmar, but in 1988, the Myanmar government changed its English name from Burma to Myanmar. The United Nations and most countries immediately adopted the new English name of Myanmar at the request of Myanmar, but some European and American countries did not follow suit.
Myanmar and the source of Myanmar
1886 to 1948, Myanmar was a province of British Indian colony, and the British used Myanmar as a substitute. There are two versions of the origin of this name: one is from the Portuguese name Birnania, which gradually evolved into Burma.
The other, which is also widely accepted, is that the British address Myanmar, which is then used by the British to address the whole Myanmar country. It is said that when the British first arrived in Myanmar, they heard the locals call the people in the city Brama, so they thought it was the name of the local people and invented Myanmar on this basis.
But in fact, Brama is what Mongolians call Burmese.
There are many versions of the origin of the word Myanmar, the most important of which is that the Mongols called Myanmar Mirmar in the 1 1 century, and the Burmese established Myanmar on this basis. There is also a saying that the Burmese people claim to be. Myanmar and Myanmar stand for "smart" and "powerful" respectively in Burmese, so the Burmese people named themselves Myanmar.
