A passage introducing caves in northern Shaanxi
Cave dwelling in northern Shaanxi is an ancient living form of traditional residents in the Loess Plateau in northwest China. The history of this cave can be traced back to more than 4000 years ago. Generally, caves are made of stone or brick, and the caves are covered with thick compacted loess. Large-scale caves can be made into multiple parallel or upper and lower floors, and other houses can be built outside to form a courtyard.

In the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia region of China, the loess layer is very thick, some of which are tens of kilometers thick. Working people creatively use the favorable terrain of the plateau to dig holes to live, and create cave architecture called green building. It is not much different from ordinary quadrangles, with a wooden eaves gallery in front and a flat roof covered with soil.

Extended data:

Type:

1, cliff type

Cliff-leaning caves include mountain-leaning caves and ditch-leaning caves, which are often arranged in curves or broken lines, with harmonious and beautiful architectural artistic effects. When the height of the hillside allows, sometimes several terraced caves are arranged, similar to modern buildings.

2. Submerged type

Sinks are underground caves, mainly distributed in the Loess Plateau-areas where there are no slopes and ditch walls to use. The practice of this kind of cave dwelling is: first dig a square pit on the spot, and then cut the cave dwelling into the wall to form a quadrilateral. People on the flat ground can only see the treetops in the yard, but can't see the house.

3. autonomous

Independent cave dwelling is a kind of arched house covered with soil, including adobe arch cave dwelling and brick arch cave dwelling. This kind of cave does not need to be close to the mountain and cliff, and it can be independent without losing the advantages of the cave. It can be a single story or a building. If the upper floor is also a hoop kiln, it is called "kiln on kiln"; If the upper floor is a wooden house, it is called a "kiln house".
