Jinan dialect belongs to the northern language, Jilu Mandarin-Century Film. With the expansion of urban areas, the popularization of Putonghua and the influx of migrants, Jinan's mother tongue is disappearing in the noisy urban language.

There were traces of human activities in Jinan as early as 89000 years ago in the early Neolithic period. About seven or eight sites were discovered during this period, including four in Jinan and four in Zhangqiu.
