The origin of the surname Di is complicated, and there are always different opinions. Guangyun records that in the Spring and Autumn Period, there was the State of Di (now Zhengding County, Hebei Province), and Chinese people took the country name as their surname and called it Di. According to the genealogy table of Emperor Taizong, his mother and brother were sealed in the imperial city (now southeast of gaoqing county), and the descendants took the emperor as their surname. "History of the North" records that ethnic minorities also have the surname of Di.
