The history of China and Shanghai

Shanghai was a fishing village at the beginning of the 1 10 century, but by the middle of the 18 century, it had become an important cotton planting area, and by the1800s, it had become the largest city in China. After the Opium War, foreigners flooded into Shanghai due to foreign trade. British people, like Americans and French people, are allowed to live within a specific territory without being bound by the laws of China. Because of all foreigners, Shanghai has been greatly influenced by western culture, but after the communist takeover, things have changed dramatically.

In the1900s, opium sales and the gambling and prostitution that followed brought huge profits. After the Japanese conquest of Shanghai, the Kuomintang government gained control of the city. Foreigners no longer have control, and by 1949, Shanghai was changed by the the Communist Party of China (CPC) municipal government.

With the departure of foreigners, the remaining enterprises were taken over by the government one after another. After losing in the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976, Deng's open door policy made it become an international power in the commercial and financial fields again.

Then in the1990s, Pudong developed rapidly.
