He studied hard while inheriting the craftsmanship of his parents. In his twenties, he became a famous grinder in the field of fan making in Hangzhou at that time. After completing his art, he worked as a polisher in the fan workshop in Qianbuji, Sansheng Bridge, Hangzhou, and there was a Chen Kai decal fan workshop in nearby Zhouye Wenlong, which was specially designed to process and manufacture high-grade mud golden flower fans for Shulianji Old Fan Village. Chen's family are experts in applique, and applique is the main process of processing clay fan. Knowing that he was capable, Chen recruited him as a son-in-law and betrothed his eldest daughter, Chen Ying. Under the guidance of her father, Chen Ying also made a good mud fan.
