Dingbian County is located in the northwest of Shaanxi Province, at the westernmost end of Yulin City, at the junction of seven counties (banners) in four provinces (regions) of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Mongolia. In ancient times, there was a saying that "Yu Yan is in the east, Ganliang is in the west, Celebration is in the south, Desert is in the north, and Sanqin fortress is vast and long". It is the northwest gateway of Shaanxi Province and the west gate of Yulin City. Since ancient times, merchants have gathered together and are known as "dry docks". County-wide jurisdiction 1 sub-district offices, 14 towns and 4 townships.

East to southeast, it is connected with Jingbian County and Wuqi County of this province; South to southwest, connected with Huachi County and Huanxian County in Gansu Province; It borders Yanchi County of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the west and Etuokeqian Banner and Uxin Banner of Inner Mongolia in the north to the northeast, which is the border of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Mongolia.

It is 236 kilometers east of Yulin City, 570 kilometers south of the provincial capital Xi, 0/70 kilometers west of Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, and 0/270 kilometers north of Beijing.

As early as Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties, there were nomadic activities of primitive tribes. Border fixing in Qin and Han Dynasties was a part of the New Qin Dynasty. Daxing County was established in the Northern Wei Dynasty, renamed Wuyuan County in the Western Wei Dynasty, and then Yanzhou.

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, General Wang Zhen led the 359th Brigade to produce crude salt in Huamachi Salt Lake in Dingbian County, which became the main source of government revenue in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. 1June, 936, the Red Army was liberated by the Western Expedition. 1949 abolished the organizational system of Anbian County (1established County in May 936) and merged into Dingbian County.
