Puyuan Town is located in the hinterland of the Yangtze River Delta Plain, at the middle node of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Jiangsu. Puyuan Town is located in the east of Tongxiang City. The ancient place name of Puyuan Town is Xu Li, also known as Yu Er. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal built in the Qin Dynasty passed through the territory. Before making suggestions in Song Dynasty, it was a grass market, which was called "Lake Tour", "Beautiful Scenery" and "Pu Chuan". Lang Pufeng wrote that he traveled south to An (now Hangzhou) with a captain riding a horse, and then moved to a secluded lake where Pu's family lived. The sixth Sun Pudou helped Song Lizong to go south, was promoted to assistant minister of official department, and was awarded the first Puyuan, hence the name of the town. In the 11th year of Dade in Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1307), Pu Jian invested to build a house and open a street, built four big tooth shops, collected mechanical products, "invited people to trade" and "merchants from afar came here", so it was also called Yongle City.

The performances of operas were generally held in Miaotai, Hunan and there were many bookstores in the town. In the 1920s, Puyuan began to show silent films. In the 1940s, there was a theater in the town. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were Yi Shu, Yixue, Xiangyun Academy and a women's association that advocated women's studies. During the Republic of China, there were two complete primary schools, 13 primary school, and vocational schools such as weaving workshops and mechanical primary schools. 1947, puyuan went to Shanghai to initiate the establishment of private meijing junior high school. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was transformed into Tongxiang County No.3 Middle School.
