Atari, USA introduced the Atari CVS game console in 1977, and sold15 million units on the eve of 1982 crash. At first, Yamauchi had a low opinion of Atari CVS's poor audio-visual performance, but the great commercial success of the mainframe made him change his mind quickly.
Yamauchi decided to go all out to enter this huge potential market. He issued an instruction to Masayuki Uemura: "Develop a pure home game machine that other manufacturers can't imitate for at least one year!" The new mainframe is nicknamed Home Computer (FC), a resounding name full of the flavor of the times. In the early 1980s, the Japanese market was flooded with more than 16 TV game consoles, but the total market size was less than 3 million. 1On July 5th, 983, Nintendo launched a new era of FC video game industry. In less than a year, the sales volume of this machine exceeded 3 million units, which set off an unprecedented fashion trend.
FC 1983 was officially listed on July 5, and Nintendo's share price soared to a record high of 6,300 yen per share after the completion of the new factory in March (40 times in three months). The first batch of 470,000 hosts were sold out in just two months, and the market demand is increasing day by day. Even many people bought Mario Bros. as a consolation when they couldn't get the mainframe. Yamauchi Pu confidently issued an order to his subordinates that the sales volume of the mainframe exceeded one million units during the year. Nintendo's external reception window suddenly received hundreds of complaints about FC mainframe failure. In the mountain, Junping Yokoi and Uemura Masayuki, who are in charge of technology, were quickly convened. Yokoi and others checked the host overnight and found that it was an extremely subtle BUG, which led to the collapse of the game when the scene dealing with a large amount of data was blocked. As long as the line is changed, the problem can be solved.
At the emergency countermeasures meeting, most executives thought that the commercial war was just around the corner at the end of the year, and if hundreds of thousands of units that had been shipped were recycled urgently, it would inevitably cause incalculable financial losses, so they could only take countermeasures by replacing them free of charge. After repeated consideration, Yamauchi believes that the brand reputation of enterprises is the most important. He immediately ordered: "Send everything back to the factory as soon as possible!"
FC missed the Christmas sales season of 1983, and directly lost more than 654,380.5 billion yen. However, Nintendo successfully avoided a crisis of damaged reputation and gradually established a good image in the eyes of Japanese consumers. In July 2003, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of FC's sale, Nintendo announced that FC game consoles were officially discontinued. So far, FC has sold more than 60 million units worldwide. Up to now, China, Taiwan Province Province, Hongkong, Thailand and even Japan are still producing products that meet FC standards.
In June, 2007, Nintendo announced that it would no longer maintain the red-and-white machine that had been used for 24 years, officially ending the era of this old-generation game machine that accompanied many fans to grow up.
