2 American history

The idea of compiling this atlas originated when I was teaching at the University of South Carolina. This book aims to provide a concise, intuitive and informative manual for American history learners. When drawing maps, I try to make full use of map data, highlight the characteristics of each map, and try to turn statistical data and historical facts into charts that are easy to watch and understand. My materials come from a large number of historical works, encyclopedias, newspapers and government reports.

It has been 25 years since the first edition of this book. During this period, the Vietnam War was in a tense stage and then ended, resulting in the death of more than 55,000 Americans. During this period, the population of the United States increased greatly, and immigrants also increased. It was also during this period that the field of defense has extended to outer space. All these constitute the symbol of this period. The new map includes these recent developments.

Since the publication of the revised edition of 1985, the paradigm of historical events has prompted me to draw 26 new maps, including the latest progress of events, such as the continuous increase of immigrants, the new changes in race and population, the US military and humanitarian actions overseas (the Gulf War of 199 1, and the aid to Somalia of 1992). The new domestic map shows the increase in mortality caused by natural disasters and accidents in the past 20 years (more than 1 10,000 deaths in 20 years), murder (250,000 deaths every decade) and the new disaster of AIDS (1 70,000 workers died every year).

The United States is also a pioneer in exploring the solar system and space defense. In order to reflect these two aspects, I drew a special map respectively. American arms sales, economic aid to poor countries, the end of cold war confrontation and environmental pollution all need to draw corresponding new maps. In addition, the growth of US forces in the Pacific region and the defense readiness at home and abroad have also been drawn.

In the process of revising this atlas, Abe Eisenstein and Kay Thomson gave me great help. Many individuals and institutions provided special materials for drawing local atlases. Here, I would like to thank:

Martin Adams, Bureau of Foreign and Military Affairs, the State Council, USA

James Hackett, member of the President's Public Advisory Committee on Arms Control

Lao An Office of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, USA

Michael Hofer, Bureau of Statistics, Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization

Interpretation of the sixth edition

The eight new maps in this edition bring us into a new period in American history-barack obama was elected as the 44th president of the United States. At the same time, it also introduces Obama's foreign visits and some measures in the early days of taking office. This version of the map also updates the death toll of American troops in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and shows us some actions taken by the American Overseas Heritage Protection Committee.

I was fortunate to benefit from professional cartographer Tim Aspden, who drew my sketches and statistics into a map with clear structure and detailed contents.

In the 4 1 year since the first edition of this map was published, I have added 57 new maps one after another. As in 1968, I will always welcome your comments on the published map, or make suggestions and supplement new information for the new map.
