Customs and culture of Doumen, Zhuhai
Doumen water marriage custom was formed in the early Qing Dynasty, matured in Tongzhi and Guangxu years of Qing Dynasty, and originated from the etiquette of Yi marriage. It combines the elements of Guangfu culture and Hakka culture, takes boats as the means of transportation, and songs run through the whole wedding activity. This traditional marriage custom has continued to this day, and some people in the former Shatian District of Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Foshan and other cities still advocate this traditional marriage custom. The water marriage custom in Doumen has also been listed in the national intangible cultural heritage list, which has become a major breakthrough in Zhuhai. Shen, director of Doumen Cultural Center, said in an interview that according to the five-year plan put forward by Doumen District, in order to better inherit and protect this intangible cultural heritage and encourage young people to adopt water weddings, it is planned to implement government incentives and other measures for newcomers who have water weddings from 2009. A wick of incense about half a meter high is neatly arranged on both sides of the village road, and the burning fire makes the village look solemn and mysterious in the night. Several villagers walked and sang on the village road with their homemade "fire dragon", and the villagers along the way also walked out of their homes and followed the crowd.

On September 7th, the 29th day of the seventh lunar month, according to local customs, villagers in Shangheng Village, Lianzhou Town, Doumen held a performance of "burning incense". It is reported that this traditional folk custom, which has been circulating in the local area for more than 260 years, has been included in the list of Doumen intangible cultural heritage, and the cultural department of Doumen District is preparing to declare it as a higher-level municipal or even provincial "intangible heritage".

According to Shen, director of Doumen Cultural Center, "loading incense on the road" is a traditional folk custom widely spread in Jiangmen, Zhongshan and Doumen, Zhuhai, among which Doumen Shangheng and Bai Jiao Liuxiang have a long history of more than 260 years. In 2009, Incense on the Road was discovered by the staff in a cultural relic survey, and was finally included in the district-level intangible cultural heritage protection list.

According to Shanghang villagers, the main purpose of "loading incense on the road" is to pray for "Tuwang" (the title of "Tuwang" in local dialect). More than 200 years ago, the northern part of Huangyang Mountain was still a piece of Wang Yang. The local ancestors made a living by fishing, mainly reclaiming land in autumn mountains and grass beaches or developing aquaculture. Agricultural harvest needs higher climatic conditions. In order to pray for good weather, the founder called on the villagers to consciously burn incense at home on the last day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, the birthday of the legendary "local emperor". Nowadays, although it has undergone great changes, this traditional folk custom has remained.

The reporter saw in Shangheng Village that night that there was a "fragrant pier" made of radish or clay at the root of Li Xiang in front of the villagers' house. Some are shaped like goose eggs, while others are like "small bowls". According to Shen, sometimes villagers use banana trees or sweet bamboo as "fragrant pier" materials; When rural roads are still dirt roads, many villagers will directly bury incense in the ground.

Another key prop of "loading incense", "Fire Dragon", was also made by villagers. The performance of "Fire Dragon" and "Dragon Body" that night is a wooden stick, "Dragon Joint" is a banana leaf stalk, and "Dragon Ball" is a pumpkin.

According to local villagers, the memorial of burning incense in "Loading Road Incense" is basically held every year, but "Fire Dragon" has not been held for decades. This year, with the support of the local cultural department, the villagers decided to "rekindle" this traditional custom. Doumen water town culture is an important part of Lingnan culture and Zhuhai marine culture.
