In 6 18 AD, in order to strengthen the traffic between the north and the south and consolidate the rule of the Sui Dynasty over the whole country, Yang Di sent a large number of laborers to dig the Grand Canal. There are Zhuo Jun (now Beijing) in the north and Yuhang (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang) in the south, with Luoyang as the central city. The Grand Canal is mainly divided into Yongji Canal, Tongji Canal, Hanjiang River and Jiangnan River.
