Historical Evolution of Enshi Scenic Area
Enshi Autonomous Prefecture has a long history. In ancient times, it was a monarchy, in the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to Pakistan, in the Warring States Period, it belonged to Wuchu County, in the Qin and Han Dynasties, it belonged to Qianzhong County and Nanjun County, in the Three Kingdoms, it belonged to Shaqu County, in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, and in the Sui Dynasty, it belonged to Qingjiang County. From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the subordinate names were changeable. In the meantime, in the sixth year of Yongzheng (1728), it was called Shixian County, and the next year it was renamed Enshi County, meaning Emperor Enze Shixian County, hence the name. Before the reunification of Qin and Yuan Dynasties, Tujia people lived in a settlement called Nanqunman in Ba County. During the period from Yuan Dynasty to Yongzheng of Qing Dynasty, Enshi implemented the chieftain system. In the 13th year of Yongzheng in Qing Dynasty (1735), it was changed to the official system (known as "changing soil into flow" in history) and placed in Nanfu. In the fifteenth year of the Republic of China (1926), Hefeng and Badong were successively placed under the jurisdiction of Enshi, becoming the beginning of eight counties. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, Enshi was the wartime capital of Hubei Province.
