Shanxi is one of the important birthplaces of the Chinese nation. The first dynasty of China, Xia, rose in the southwest of the mountain and the west of Henan.

The Zhou Dynasty, Shanxi was named Jin. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the monarch Jin Wengong was one of the five tyrants. During the Warring States period, it was divided up by Korea, Zhao and Wei, and Shanxi was later dubbed "Sanjin".

During the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shihuang established five counties in Shaanxi: Taiyuan, Shangdang, Hedong, Yanbei and Dai Jun.

During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Pingcheng (now Datong) was once the capital of the north, and Jinyang (now Taiyuan) was once the capital of the Eastern Wei Dynasty and the Northern Qi Dynasty.

During the Sui Dynasty, Taiyuan, Chang 'an and Luoyang became the three major cities in the Yellow River Basin. At the end of Sui Dynasty, Li Yuan and Li Shimin set out from Shanxi to seize the world, established the Tang Dynasty, made Chang 'an its capital, and honored Taiyuan as "Beijing" to commemorate the founding of Korea in this land.

Datong in Liao and Jin Dynasties is the capital of Liao and Jin Dynasties for two hundred years.

Shanxi, Shandong and Hebei were called the "hinterland" of the Yuan Dynasty, and Datong, Pingyang (now Linfen) and Taiyuan were famous cities in the Yellow River Basin.

In Ming Dynasty, Shanxi Province was located in Taiyuan. In the Qing Dynasty, Shanxi's commercial development entered a golden age, and "Shanxi merchants" played an important role in the national economic lifeline.

From the early years of the Republic of China, Shanxi was once an "independent kingdom" ruled by warlords. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, Taihang Mountain and Wutai Mountain became the strategic bases of the Eighth Route Army, and Shanxi became famous again.
