The core courses of a four-year senior high school include four years of English (writing, English literature and American literature), three years of history (world history, American history and European history), three years of mathematics (geometry, algebra I and algebra II), science, sociology, leadership, geography and economics. Art courses vary from school to school.

The following are compulsory subjects for grades 9- 12 in American high schools.
