I was born and raised in Beijing. For decades, I have never left Beijing for a long time except for the Cultural Revolution. Beijing watched me grow up and mature day by day, and I read it over and over again as I grew older, until I myself became a witness to its decades-long changes. Whenever I return to Beijing from other places, I will admire its unique elegance and brilliance as a national capital; When I come back from abroad, I often lament that it is dusty because of pollution. But whether the light is dim or sunny, Beijing turns a blind eye to my skin.
From the day I stepped into the door of historical research, I wanted to take the history of Beijing as my research direction. The reason why I didn't do this is that I can't go in through this door. It was not until I contacted the research method of oral history ten years ago that I finally found a way to enter the depths of Beijing's history and express it, that is, to trace back the history of Beijing for nearly a hundred years from the perspective of individuals, that is, from the perspective of personal life experiences and life processes. Through interviews, I want to see how Beijingers remember and express their past, how they relate their personal experiences to the social environment, and how they let the past …
