Picture books originated in the west and were born in Europe and America in the second half of the19th century. In Asia, countries and regions with better picture books are Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan Province Province. The picture books in Taiwan Province Province of China started in the late 1960s, and gradually got better after 1980s. In Chinese mainland, picture books were only the initial stage of the Renaissance. All human civilizations have a tradition of picture narration, and characters also originated from pictures, so does the Chinese nation. According to archaeological findings, there are pictures left by ancestors in the Yangtze River and Yellow River basins in China, such as rock paintings, pottery paintings and murals, which can be regarded as the earliest record of describing events with pictures in China. Pictures on bronzes in Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, stone reliefs in Qin and Han Dynasties, tomb murals in Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, scroll paintings in the Five Dynasties and Song Dynasties, woodcut illustrations of operas and novels in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Generally speaking, although these illustrations have the ability to tell stories at first, they lack a very important element. They are not telling stories from the perspective of children, nor are they works for children. As an independent individual, children were discovered only after the May 4th Movement.
