With the arrival of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the Red Army, which fought guerrilla warfare in eight southern provinces, formed the New Fourth Army at 1938. Commander Ye Ting, political commissar, deputy commander Xiang Ying, chief of staff Zhang, and director of the Political Department Deng Zihui. Later, Chen Yi served as commander and political commissar. It has four detachments. From the establishment of 1938 to the cancellation of the designation of 1947, during the history of 10, the New Fourth Army used various badges. Such as "resisting the enemy", bronze medallion, "New Fourth Army" and so on. But the most influential is the armband marked with "N4A".

Today, it is used as the symbol of the New Fourth Army in many newspapers, magazines, literary works and buildings. So, how did this armband come into being? Who is its author? What does this mean?

The designer of "N4A" armband is Zhuang Wuzhou. He is an overseas Chinese; My father is from Taiwan Province Province, my mother is Japanese, and my whole family makes a living in Nanyang. He loved painting since he was a child and studied western painting at school. After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he and many patriotic overseas Chinese youths resolutely returned to China and devoted themselves to the cause of the Anti-Japanese War.

After the Southern Anhui Incident, the New Fourth Army rebuilt its military headquarters in Yancheng. After many blockades, Zhuang Wuzhou came to the Central China Anti-Japanese Base Work Center and devoted himself enthusiastically to the base work.

In order to meet the needs of the development of the situation, Liu Shaoqi and Chen Yi decided to open the Huazhong Branch of Lu Xun Art College to train literary and artistic talents for the troops and base areas. Zhuang Wuzhou, together with Mo Pu, Xu Xingzhi and others, transferred to the Fine Arts Department of Lu Xun Art College to teach.

Lu Yi in Central China was founded less than two months ago, and nearly 200 students signed up. Most of them came in from outside the base areas, except the young people on both sides of the lower Yangtze River, and the children of overseas Chinese in Guangdong, Fujian and overseas. There are more than 50 students in the Art Department, which is the largest department. Every freshman's first concern is to put on the uniform of the New Fourth Army as soon as possible and match it with the armband of the New Fourth Army.

At that time, it was the time when the Kuomintang revoked the title of the New Fourth Army, but we were tit for tat and continued to hold high the banner of the New Fourth Army. Zhuang Wuzhou carefully designed a NEW armband for this purpose: "N4A" consists of the initials N, 4 and A of English New, which stands for "New Fourth Army". This armband is printed with lithographs, with simple and smooth lines and blue characters on a white background, which is eye-catching and powerful, and is very popular among students. The "N4A" armband was soon widely used in the New Fourth Army.
