The East Lake in Shaoxing is an artificial lake. But its origin is unusual. Its location was originally a bluestone mountain. More than 2,000 years ago, Ying Zheng, the first Qin Emperor, was stationed here to drink horses during his east tour, so it was called Ruoruo Mountain.
After the Han dynasty, because of the development needs of Huiji City. This place has been developed into a stone factory. After years of quarrying, hammering and chopping, the original Ruoruo Mountain is only half left, and the hollowed-out part has formed a cliff more than 50 meters high. Because quarrymen usually have to go tens of meters underground to get stones. After a long time, a clear water pool with a length of more than 200 meters and a width of about 80 meters was formed at the foot of the mountain.
In the 20th year of Guangxu in Qing Dynasty, Tao Junxuan, a famous rural sage and calligrapher in Shaoxing, had a unique eye and took a fancy to the residual water from quarrying. With the help of his brother Tao Zaikuan and Tao, he raised more than 8,000 taels of silver, built bridges and roads, planted weeping willows all over the place, and built pavilions and terraces, thus forming the East Lake with a harmonious landscape. After a hundred years of development and transformation, East Lake has gradually become a wonderful landscape bonsai. It has also become a representative scenic spot in Shaoxing.
Although it is artificially carved and dressed, the area is not large, but the scenery of East Lake is not inferior at all. It has become a rare "wonder in the lake" with its ingenious combination of steep cliffs, wonderful caves, quaint stone bridges and clear lakes. The cliffs here are different in color and the caves are different in shape. No matter how far you look, you can feel different beauty. This is a wonderful work, amazing.
If you take a cruise to visit East Lake, you can also go deep into Taogong Cave and Xiantao Cave. It can be said that I haven't been to East Lake before I entered the second hole. Taogong Cave is like a natural giant well, more like a giant clock with water. Only a small boat can pass through the entrance. After entering the cave, it is a unique place. Looking up at a small piece of sky at the bottom of the cave, the artistic conception of sitting in the well and watching the sky is in sight.
Its Xiantao Cave is named after its entrance looks like a peach. Tao Junxuan, a famous scholar in the Qing Dynasty, wrote a pair of inscriptions on both sides of the entrance. The first part is "The hole is 500 feet deep" and the second part is "Peach Blossoms bloom for three thousand years". There is a lake in the cave and a door in the cave. Only when you are there can you feel its wonder.
East Lake is now a national 4A-level tourist attraction. It is a beautiful business card of Shaoxing ancient city. If you travel to Zhejiang, it must be a treasure worth punching in.
