When was pomegranate introduced into China and where was it first produced?
According to many ancient documents, pomegranate was brought back from the Anshi country in Tulin when Zhang Qian was sent to the Western Regions in the Han Dynasty, and gradually spread to areas suitable for planting in China. Pomegranate is recorded in the ancient books unearthed from Mawangdui Han Tomb in Changsha in 1970s. Historical data and modern archaeology prove that pomegranate has been introduced into China for more than 2,000 years. Japanese scholar Akio Kikuchi's "Fruit Gardening" suspects that pomegranate was introduced from Iran to India in the 3rd century, then from India to Tibet in China, then from Tibet to Sichuan, Yunnan and other places, and finally to Southeast Asian countries. So far, pomegranate is abundant in Yunnan, Sichuan and parts of Tibet. This may be another route of transmission.
