Shanghai Opera originated from Dongxiang tune, a folk song in Pudong, Shanghai, and was formed in the late Qing Dynasty in Shanghai. It is popular in Shanghai and parts of Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Yong Opera was called Ningbo Tanquan in its early days. It originated in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and is popular in eastern Zhejiang and Shanghai. Like Yao Ju and Hu Opera in Zhejiang, it belongs to the Shanghai Spring Chamber system. The predecessor of Yue Opera is the popular rap form of Sheng County, Zhejiang Province.
