Building structure
Guangdong Provincial Museum has a total construction area of 67,000 square meters, with one basement and five floors above ground. The exhibition hall is divided into four parts: history museum, nature museum, art museum and temporary exhibition hall. The building of the museum adopts the design concept of treasure chest. The museum is shaped like a carved treasure box. This design concept originated from the traditional handicraft of Guangdong-ivory ball. The spatial organization of museums is like the hollowing out of ivory balls. Internal functional layers are interlocking. The exhibition hall, cloister and atrium are closely integrated with the whole structure, and are unfolded from the inside to the outside. A large area of green grass slope gradually slows down along the museum, forming a clear main entrance square, which is integrated with the central avenue.
The height of the atrium of Guangdong Museum reaches the top floor from the audience hall, and natural light is sprinkled from the glass skylight at the top as the main public space. The periphery is connected with the upper and lower corridors through ramps, stairs and escalators to guide the audience into the exhibition hall. At the same time, different activity halls are set in the corridor to float above the atrium, and steel bridges are set on the activity halls, which become the active factors of the space. In order to continue the concept of carving through the treasure chest, the corridor is also separated from the atrium space by perforated metal plates, which strengthens the sense of hierarchy. Guangdong Provincial Museum was awarded the first batch of national first-class museums by National Cultural Heritage Administration.
