Qidong County is located in the southwest of Hengyang, on the north bank of the middle reaches of Xiangjiang River. It is long and narrow from east to west, high in the north and low in the south.

1952 was separated from the original Qiyang county, and it was named because it was located in the east of Qiyang.

The county has jurisdiction over 23 townships and 9 10 administrative villages (community neighborhood committees). It is a famous "hometown of yellow flowers in China", "hometown of generals" and "hometown of ferrous metals", and it is also the only "hometown of Chinese Quyi" in Hunan Province at present.
