Today's Gao 'an territory belonged to Wu Yuechu during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. In the twenty-fourth year of Qin Shihuang (223 BC), after Qin destroyed Chu, it belonged to Jiujiang County.

From 2065438 to March 2009, Gao 'an City was included in the list of the first batch of revolutionary cultural relics protection and utilization counties (Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi regions).
