Historical Evolution of Tianchi Lake in Ningwu
Tianchi was formed during the Cenozoic Quaternary Glacier Period, with a history of 3 million years. It is one of the three high mountain Tianchi Lake in China, which is rare in the world. In ancient times, it was called Qilian Pool or Qilian Park. Located at the eastern foot of Gongshuiling, 20km southwest of ningwu county, with an altitude of1954m. Tianchi Lake is also called "Mother Sea".

Tianchi was called Qilianchi and Qilianpo in ancient times. According to legend, Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty once pierced seven fish with golden beads and put them into Tianchi to see if they could sneak into the Sanggan River. He also hit a flying whale in the pool with an arrow, both of which were later obtained in the Sanggan River hundreds of miles away. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Tianchi tourism reached its peak. The earliest records of Tianchi Lake can be found in Shan Hai Jing and other works. Later, it was recorded in Zi Tong Zhi Jian, Sui Shu, Tang Shu, San Guan Zhi, Jin Wen and other ancient books. As early as in The Classic of Mountains and Seas, there were two Tianchi Lake, one of which is Ningwu Tianchi Lake, which has the most complete Quaternary glacial landform in China and has been a resort for summer sightseeing and hunting since ancient times. In midsummer, it is refreshing to bathe in the breeze by the Tianchi Lake and watch the beautiful scenery of Fenyuan Resort. Tianchi is in harmony with more than ten alpine lakes such as Chi Yuan, Pipa Sea, Duck Sea, Laoshihai, Liganhai, Waiganhai and Xiaohai.
