Better die than die.
From the Biography of jing yuan in the Northern Qi Dynasty: "My brother Chu Yong (the father of An) only attacked Liu Wang and died, and his son Jing Haosi. During Tianbao (the reign of Emperor Gaoyang was proclaimed by Qi Wenxuan), most of Yuan Di's closest relatives were slaughtered, and they were like disciples of Jing 'an. They invited Gao (Ann's cousin) and said, "Do you have to give up this family and adopt his surname? A gentleman would rather die than interact. " Jing 'an took this sentence to Bai Xianzu, but punished him. His family moved to Pengcheng, so Jing 'an changed his surname to Gao. "
Would rather die than surrender (Hao Jing)
Jing yuan Ann's cousin, jing yuan Hao, is firmly opposed. He said, "How can we abandon this clan and take refuge in his surname to save our lives? A gentleman would rather die than die! I would rather die than change my surname. " The metaphor of "it is better to die than to die" means to sacrifice for integrity. (From the biography of jing yuan in Northern Qi Dynasty)
"Chasing his surname" is born, "not chasing his surname" is dead. In the end, Yuan was killed because his surname was not easy, which showed his resolute maintenance of personal dignity. Later, this allusion was abstracted and its meaning was greatly sublimated. It has been used to describe people who would rather make sacrifices, even devote themselves to lofty and just causes, rather than making sacrifices for petty profits. It has been used for thousands of years.
