History of Jiuyan Bridge in Chengdu
Jiuyan Bridge was built in the first ten years of Ming Dynasty and the 21st year of Wanli (A.D. 1593), with a history of 400 years.
Before 1950s, Jiuyanqiao was a lively water pier, from which you had to take a boat out of Chengdu and go down to Chongqing by water. Moreover, all the goods shipped by water from other places have to land here.
As the name implies, the 9-hole bridge, formerly known as Hongji Bridge, also known as Zhenjiang Bridge, is the largest stone arch bridge in Jinjiang. The ancients loved to describe the magnificence of the stone arch bridge with "Changhong lying in waves", but Jiuyan Bridge is not "Changhong" but "bow". Not far from the south of the bridge, there used to be a Huilan Pagoda (commonly known as the White Pagoda) built at the same time with the bridge, forming a strange landscape of "the bridge is a bow pagoda and the arrow is an arrow".
