Where is Taiyuan Pozi Street? Does anyone know?
pozi street

brief introduction

The exact age of its formation is unknown, but it has been handed down from generation to generation by citizens. As early as the Sui and Tang Dynasties, or earlier, a market town had been formed here, which was the only way for the ancient town of Tang Ming to reach the ancient city of Sanjiao. During the period of rejuvenating the country in Song Taiping, after the establishment of Taiyuan City, it became Chengguan Street outside Huaide Gate, the north gate of Taiyuan City. It was not until the expansion of Taiyuan City in the early Ming Dynasty that its streets merged into the city and became a street in the city.

According to the old lady, long before the formation of Pozi Street, today the area around Pozi Street is the loess slope with high northeast and low southwest. Later, a rich and powerful family, because of the good topography and geomantic omen here, bought this slope, built the ancestral grave, and put two stone lions carved out of stones in the grave as grave keepers. In this way, this slope got a name, called "Shishi Slope".

Because Shishipo is located on one side of the north-south traffic artery, over the years, some restaurants have gradually moved to the bottom of the slope to receive passers-by and businessmen, and gradually become a lively place, and will be named "Shishipo Street" after the street name, which is called "on the slope". The names on Shishipo Street and Pozi have been called for many years. Anyway, Sui, Tang, Song, Jin, Yuan and Ming dynasties have been passed down for thousands of years.

The Ming Dynasty fell, the Qing Dynasty was established, and the Qing army occupied Taiyuan. It was considered that the name of Shishipo Street was unlucky and the slope was indecent, so it was chosen as Pingshun Street. However, the newly adopted Pingshun Street is not only incompatible with the customary names formed by people over the years, but also divorced from the support of early natural geographical features. Therefore, the new street name is not accepted by most people after all, and can only exist in written records and local chronicles.

In the early years of the Republic of China, Pozitou, as a street name, was moved to the Detailed Map of Shanxi Provincial Capital, which reflected the fine features of streets and lanes. The book "Guide to Taiyuan" published in the middle of the Republic of China officially uses the name of Pozi Street, which has been in use ever since.

In a sense, time is the most powerful. With the passage of time and the change of history, the desolate Shishi slope has long been submerged and unknown to the world. In the history of Taiyuan's urban development, this ordinary street, which developed from Shishi Slope to Pozi Street, has become the best witness of the great changes in the ancient city.
