What was Hunan called in ancient times?
Hunan was called "Huxiang" in ancient times. In fact, Huxiang originally referred to Dongting Lake and Xiangjiang River.

Because most of these two places are in today's Hunan Province, Huxiang is often used to refer to today's Hunan. Hunan was once regarded as a land of barbarians, but in fact, although the land of Huxiang was far from the political and cultural center in a historical period, it was far from a land of barbarians. At the beginning, Hunan was already a member of the Yanhuang cultural circle when the Chinese ancestors created the world.

For example, Emperor Yan, that is, Shennong, died after tasting a hundred herbs for the world, and was finally "buried in Changsha Tea Village", while the Yellow Emperor was once "the field where Emperor Zhang Xianchi liked to go to the wedding".

The importance of Hunan in history;

In ancient times, Hunan was an important member of the Chinese civilization circle, and even one of the birthplaces. Only with the demise of Chu, the economic and political center of gravity moved northward in an all-round way, which made Hunan once marginalized, regarded as a "barbarian land" and became a relegated place for officials in Han and Tang Dynasties.

However, with the gradual shift of economic center of gravity to the south after the Tang Dynasty, it became the most important hinterland of the Southern Song Dynasty, and its economy, politics, military and culture all had undeniable glory. Until today, the so-called "no Hunan, no army" is an example of brilliant achievements.
