folk custom

Before the Qing Dynasty, most places offered sacrifices to stoves on the 24th of the twelfth lunar month. For example, "Local Habits Records" written in the Jin and Zhou Dynasties records: "Sacrificing the kitchen god on the 24th night of the twelfth lunar month means going to heaven the next day, and I am one year old, so I will sacrifice the kitchen for one day first." Another example is Fan Chengda's poem "Sacrifice to a Kitchen Stove": "It is said in ancient times that the kitchen god speaks to the sky in the twelfth lunar month." There is also Yu Qian's "Twenty-four of the twelfth lunar month" in the Ming Dynasty.

In the early and middle Qing Dynasty, the sacrificial furnace was always the 24th of the twelfth lunar month. And at least until the Qianlong period, it was a sacrifice on the 24th of the twelfth lunar month. "Lu" Volume 12 "Reading for Four Nights in December": "It is customary to say that reading for four nights in the twelfth lunar month means sending meals at night." From the middle and late Qing Dynasty, the royal family held a ceremony to worship heaven on the 23rd of the twelfth lunar month. In order to "save money", they also worshipped the kitchen god. Therefore, in the northern region, cooking stoves are often sacrificed on the 23rd of the twelfth lunar month.

Off-year is also a traditional day for offering sacrifices to stoves. In this small year, people will not only put honeydew melons and cakes on the console table in front of the kitchen god, but also replace the old kitchen god statue and paste the new kitchen god statue that every household "invites" back. Remove dust and scale before and after sacrifice. In addition to preparing offerings, there is also an important task-cleaning the kitchen, washing pots and pans during the day, cleaning the kitchen, and performing sacrificial ceremonies at night.
