On the Origin and History of the Cheng Family
Cheng Liang, the water messenger of the Western Jin Dynasty, was exiled to Liangzhou (now Wuwei, Gansu) for some reason. His son Cheng Zhao was appointed as the Minister of Civil Affairs of Hou Liang, and his grandson Cheng Jun gave lectures in Beiliang (now Zhangye, Gansu) for the East Palace.

In the Southern Song Dynasty, Gunhan (now Linxia, Gansu) was raised by Cheng Daoyang, and was later destroyed to Shu (now Sichuan), and was honored as the King of Shu by the local people.

During the Northern Wei Dynasty, more than 2,000 households of the Cheng family in Luoyang moved to Yunzhong County and settled in Dongsheng House (now Togtoh, Inner Mongolia).

In this way, Cheng's family spread all over the Great Wall.

During the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, the surname Cheng flourished all over the north. Guangping County (now southern Hebei), Anding County (now southeastern Gansu and southern Ningxia), Dongping County (now western Shandong), Jing (now central Shaanxi) and other places have many titles and princes, and Cheng has become a local noble family.

Cheng's surname in Jiangxia County, Ezhou, and jiangling county, Jingzhou (now Hubei Province) in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has also rapidly expanded its influence in this county.

Kaifeng is the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty and Luoyang is Xijing. Many Cheng families moved from various places to Kaifeng and Luoyang, and the Cheng family in Henan was revived.

Later, due to the southward migration of Jin Binghe, many adults from the Central Plains also moved southward to the Jianghuai area.

The descendants of Ilocheng also moved south with the Song Dynasty.

Cheng Hao's eldest son Cheng settled in Wumen (now Wuxian, Jiangsu), Cheng Yi's eldest son Cheng Duanzhong was martyred in Lu 'an (now Anhui), his second son Cheng Duanfu moved to Jincheng (now Jurong, Jiangsu), and his third son Cheng Duanyan moved to Chizhou (now Guichi, Anhui).

Cheng Jiong, a native of Ningling, Yingtian (present-day Henan), moved his family to Yuyao, Shaoxing (present-day Zhejiang) and started Cheng's family in eastern Zhejiang.

Sun Deyong, the ninth Cheng Yi of the Yuan Dynasty, returned to Luoyang from Chizhou to guard his ancestral grave.

Later, his descendants moved to Taikang, Xiayi in eastern Henan and Heze Shan County in southwestern Shandong.

The Yuan Dynasty established the lawsuit of Cheng Xiao Fanchang in Guiyang, Guizhou.

In the fourth year of Hongwu in the early Ming Dynasty (137 1), Fan Changcheng was attached to the Ming Dynasty by his grandson.

Today, the surname Cheng has spread all over the country.

The provinces with more adult residents in China mainly include Henan, Anhui, Shanxi, Hebei, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangdong, Shandong, Gansu and Ningxia.

It is said that there are 98 schools of Cheng surname in China, among which there are 18 schools in Henan, ranking first in all places.
