The apartment is equipped with facilities and places such as life service, call for help and alarm, medical care, rest and entertainment, cultural study and self-help labor. With the development of welfare undertakings in the west and the improvement of the conditions of apartments for the elderly, many elderly people who have children or relatives to take care of voluntarily apply to live in apartments for the elderly in order to avoid intergenerational conflicts.

Before the United States passed the social security bill of 1935, state governments had set up apartments for the elderly. After 1935, large-scale construction began, mainly for the elderly with economic foundation. When Britain implemented the national aid law in 1948, it was stipulated that every city government should set up apartments for the poor and homeless elderly. If the municipal government lacks financial resources, it can cooperate with charitable organizations to build it.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, China began to build apartments for the elderly in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian and Yantai. Since then, various forms of apartments for the elderly established by the state, society or enterprises have appeared everywhere.
The Policy Office of China Research Center on Aging conducted a survey of more than 600 middle-aged and elderly people aged over 50 in Beijing/KLOC-0. It was found that more than 1000 people wanted to live in apartments for the elderly, and some apartments for the elderly were still overcrowded, so apartments for the elderly became more and more popular among the elderly.
The earliest apartment for the elderly in this city was opened by the Social Welfare Institute in 1996, providing self-care, semi-self-care and full care services with different fees. In recent years, welfare homes in counties are also actively expanding to comprehensive welfare service places for the elderly. For example, Longhua, Kuancheng, Chengde County, Ruth and other places have better conditions, and some elderly people have lived in apartments for the elderly, but the number is small.
After 2009, many apartments for the elderly are no longer independent charities or welfare institutions, but have become a demand. Some people even start booking apartments for the elderly before retirement.
