Zhang Xuecheng was born in 1738 and died in 180 1 year. He was a famous historian, local chronicler and writer in Qing Dynasty, and put forward the theory that "the six classics are all history".

It turns out that Zhang Xuecheng is not called "Xuecheng", but called Zhang Wen and Zhang Wenbi, whose real names are Zhai and Zhejiang Huiji. Zhang Xuecheng showed great interest in history and literature since he was a child. He is studious and determined to pursue knowledge. After studying in imperial academy for two years, Zhang Xuecheng was 28 years old and studied with Zhu Jun, a student from Peking University. Zhu Yun was a famous scholar at that time. He is not only knowledgeable, but also has a large collection of books at home. Zhang Xuecheng learned a lot here.

He browsed books in Zhu Yun's home, and often discussed academic origins and similarities and differences with famous scholars from various schools, and his knowledge grew very rapidly. It can be said that this period is the peak of Zhang Xuecheng's learning and growth.

In the forty-second year of Qianlong, Zhang Xuecheng took part in the provincial examination and was a scholar in the second year. Originally a classic of imperial academy, he taught in Dingwu, Baoding Lianchi, Gui Dewen Zheng and other academies. Later, he entered the shogunate of Bi Yuan, Governor of Huguang, and assisted in compiling books such as "Continuing to Manage Mirrors".

Although Zhang Xuecheng was born a scholar and could be an official by rights, Zhang Xuecheng himself did not want to enter the official career, but was addicted to compiling books.

Since he was 27 years old, he has been compiling Tianmen County Records with his father. During the twenty years from thirty-eight to fifty-eight years in Qianlong, he compiled or participated in Hezhou Annals, Yongqing Annals, Daming Annals, Bozhou Annals and Hubei Annals. This is only a part, and there are many pre-edited local chronicles.

In the long-term practice, Zhang Xuecheng has accumulated rich practical experience and theoretical thoughts. He summed up decades of compilation history, made a serious study on the origin, nature, style, function and compilation method of local chronicles, and formed a systematic theory of local chronicles, which had a great influence on the study of modern local chronicles.

Everyone says that learning in theory and growing in practice. It was in the process of compiling Historical Records that he began to systematically sum up and improve his historical thoughts. He majored in and participated in more than ten local chronicles in his life, and wrote a lot of annotations. It is no exaggeration to say that the process of compiling Historical Records is the process of his growth and maturity.

Zhang Xuecheng's theoretical thought was obtained through his own practice, which has great influence on the historical research of later generations.

In the sixth year of Jiaqing 180 1, Zhang Xuecheng passed away safely at the age of 63.
