History of Yancheng area
Before the Dutch occupation, there were boats fishing for mullet in Yancheng area. During the Ming and Zheng dynasties, the residents here made a living by drying salt. 170 1 year (forty-nine years of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty), Fengshan county officials thought that shooting dogs at the seaside was beneficial to fish and salt, so it attracted more than 20 people to open a salt field here. Because it is adjacent to the dog mouth, it is called "dog salt". Yan Cheng's "Cheng" is a synonym for "Ting" in Taiwanese, both of which refer to "Workplace Square".

1908, the construction of Kaohsiung Port was completed, and the area was covered by the sediment at the bottom of the port, which changed from Yantian Zeguo to Haipu New Land. 1928, kaohsiung municipal affairs service center moved to purong town (formerly kaohsiung municipal government, now kaohsiung history museum), which developed rapidly. Since the establishment of Yancheng District after the war, Kaohsiung City was the most populous administrative district in the1960s. However, due to the eastward movement of the commercial center, the population began to drop sharply. In 2004, it replaced Qijin District and became the least populous administrative district in the city.
