The story of Su Dongpo when he was an official in Hangzhou.
Su Dongpo was an official in Hangzhou twice.

1. The first time I worked in Hangzhou was 1069. That year, Su Dongpo was 36 years old. He was demoted to Huangzhou for opposing Prime Minister Wang Anshi's young crops money law, and later to Hangzhou as a local official, with a rank below the magistrate for three years.

After taking office, he began to devote himself to the investigation and study of West Lake water conservancy and Hangzhou urban development. The dredging of the West Lake depends on the smooth flow of six wells and the smooth flow of six wells in Hangzhou. In 1070, Su Dongpo was transferred from Hangzhou at the beginning of the restoration project in six wells.

2. The second time I came to Renzhi Prefecture in Hangzhou was 1086 years later. That year, Hangzhou suffered from floods and droughts. So at the age of 54, his wish to dredge the West Lake 0/6 years ago was mentioned again. At that time, the situation in the West Lake was very bad. The lake was shrinking in a large area because of the accumulation of weeds, and it was on the verge of extinction.

Hangzhou's agriculture, handicrafts, transportation, people's life and the development of the whole city are all threatened. Once the West Lake is abandoned, not only thousands of hectares of farmland along the lake will lose irrigation water, but also aquatic organisms such as fish, shrimp and lotus roots in the West Lake itself will be completely lost. At that time, Hangzhou was one of the most developed cities in China. When the West Lake is abandoned, the wine industry will be unsustainable, and the court will also lose a huge tax source for the wine industry.

In addition, there were two canals in Hangzhou at that time, Maoshan and Yanqiao, which ran through the north and south and connected with the Jiangnan Canal, and were the traffic lifeblood of Hangzhou. They used the West Lake as their water source during the rich period of lakes. Not only is the river unobstructed and silted, but the river can also be used by urban residents.

However, with the depletion of the lake, the canal had to rely on Qiantang River water. In this way, the salt tide will flow backward and repel brine along the river, and a large amount of sediment will be deposited in the canal with the salt tide, so that the canal will be dredged every three to five years, and the cost is very high.

What's more, with the destruction of the West Lake, Hangzhou residents will be trapped in salt water and bitter water, and people's survival will become a problem. Faced with such a serious threat, Su Dongpo, who has a vision of urban construction and development, made a plan to comprehensively renovate the West Lake and build a water system in Hangzhou. While fighting the imperial court, we raised funds for the project and began to dredge the West Lake on a large scale.
