It was called Liyang in ancient times, and Liyang County was located in the Western Han Dynasty. It was changed to Zhou Xun in the Song Dynasty and to County in the Ming Dynasty. The county seat was built in Ming Dynasty, and there are some existing city walls. 1994 was named by the State Council and approved as a national historical and cultural city. It is the only county-level national historical and cultural city among the eight national historical and cultural cities in Henan Province. It is the first batch of provincial-level scenic spots 1987 announced by the provincial government. In July 2003, it was declared as an AAAA-level scenic spot by the National Tourism Administration.

The "Mud Goo Goo" in Xunxian County is listed in the "National Intangible Cultural Heritage" list. Xunxian's annual "Temple Fair in the First Month" is well known. It is a living fossil of the folk culture in the Central Plains and a microcosm of the original ecological culture. After visiting the temple fair, a German folklore scholar called Xunxian Temple Fair "China People's Carnival".
