Huaxi Reservoir, now also called Huaxi Lake, was built during the Great Leap Forward in the last century and was carefully designed by Soviet experts. The dam type is double-pier hollow big-head dam, with the crest elevation of 1 143.4m and the maximum dam height of 49m. On the front, the four Chinese characters "Huaxi Reservoir" were written by Zhou Lin, then secretary of the provincial party committee and governor. Its water control project is mainly composed of six major projects: dam, spillway, water diversion pipeline, powerhouse behind dam, underwater outlet and Hua 'a United Reservoir. After the initial storage of 1960, the normal water level elevation is 1 137.9 meters, with a total storage capacity of 23.8 million cubic meters. It is a medium-sized reservoir with water supply and power generation functions. It can supply 58.8 million cubic meters of water to Guiyang every year, which really relieves the contradiction of the downstream water environment.

In the later period of Huaxi Reservoir construction, there was also an accident. At that time, the government of the former Soviet Union headed by Khrushchev finally decided to withdraw all the experts who assisted China from June 1959 because of disagreement with the government of China. The professional ethics of Soviet experts who were ordered to return to China within a time limit are very noble, and they always regard Huaxi Reservoir under construction as the apple of their eye and take good care of it. Of course, they don't want to be apart. When he left, he visited the reservoir accompanied by Luo, deputy head of Huaxi District and deputy commander of the construction project, and solemnly explained many problems in the later construction of the project many times. Its deep feelings and serious responsibility made the people present awe and moved.

After the operation of Huaxi Reservoir, it has indeed withstood the test of countless floods, which proves that its engineering quality is excellent. For example, in the summer of 196 1, continuous rainstorms and long floods, and newly-built reservoirs are the places that everyone is most worried about. According to several old people interviewed by the author, such as Jia and Feng Zengcai, the thick water column ejected from the spillway was like a straight line and the momentum was like a rainbow. At that time, the Songbaishan Reservoir was not built until the mid-1970s. At that time, there was no water conservancy project upstream to help it fight floods and provide disaster relief. Everyone said that as long as you can pass the customs smoothly this time, you don't have to worry about it in the future. However, the reservoir dam really stood despite the surge and impact of the flood, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief and looked at it with new eyes. It has stood in the Three Gorges for more than forty years.
