1992 On the eve of the Spring Festival, Li Renjie, the abbot of Sichuan Lezhi Guobao Temple, asked the people in the temple to write three big characters in red paper: "Abbot Liao" and put it on the door of a room on the left side of the living room.

Li Jushi thought that the master was going to move to a new house and asked with a smile, "Master, when will you move here?"

"I'm not coming. It's the new abbot. "

"Which one is it?"

The master smiled mysteriously: "You will know later."

1992, 16 On the morning of April, Buddhist Li Renjie recorded that he wanted to send an urgent telegram to Chengdu Wenshuyuan:

"Zhang Miaoshou, editorial office of Chengdu Wenshuyuan Provincial Buddhist Association: I am critically ill and have a business plan for the temple economy. I hope you and Feng Xuecheng will come soon. Lezhi Guobao Temple is far away from electricity. 1992 April 16. "

At 10 in the morning, the telegram was sent.

In the afternoon, the master went to the temple building site to conduct on-site command. His eyes are bright and fresh, and there is no sign of illness.

However, after the telegram was sent, the laity in Lezhi County was extremely nervous. A large group of people found a car and went straight to Guobao Temple.

At 9 o'clock in the evening, the bus arrived at Guobao Temple, and everyone entered Master's room. Seeing that the master was as peaceful as usual, they all bowed. Then the master said, "You are all here. It's time for Zhang Miaoshou to come."

Then, I solemnly talked about a few things, one of which was the future heir of Guobao Temple.

Zhang Miaoshou, the heir of the temple, is now a college student in Wen Shu University. After the exam, he became a county magistrate. He is the heir to this temple, and his dharma name is always true. He immediately shaved. "

Before going to bed at night, the master asked the layman Pan to draft a telegram to Zhang Miaoshouhe.

"Draft tomorrow!"

The master quickly said, "no, no, write now!" " "

Pan wrote a telegram: "Chengdu Academy transferred Zhang Miaoshou to Lai Su Temple Buddhist College. Desire. "

All this shows that the master has always been conscious, and his heart has not been reversed.

Master and Chang Jie each covered a quilt and went to sleep. Chang Jie slept in it and smelled a strange smell all over the house.

At night 12, the master wanted to drink water. Chang Jie changed the glucose water and the master took a sip.

After sleeping for a while, the master asked, "What time is it?" Chang Jie replied, "It's half past three."

After sleeping for a while, the master asked, "What time is it?" Chang Jie replied, "It's almost half past four." The master said, "Almost. I'm not busy, I want to relieve myself. " I pee after getting up and want to drink water. Chang Jie brought water from a small porcelain cup and said, "It's cold, so you can't drink it." He said, "Yes!" Drink half, keep half, and give the porcelain cup to Chang Jie. Not good! The master's throat purred with phlegm.

Chang Jie panicked. While holding the master, he shouted, "Teacher Pan, come quickly!" "

Teacher Pan came into the room and said, "Go and get Dr. Deng!"

Deng immediately ran over, pressed his temples, felt his pulse, shook his head and said, "I'm leaving!" " "

At this time, the venerable sir's face is as rosy, shiny and lifelike as usual, and he sits firmly by the bed with his hands on his knees. As usual, he sat for two days and two nights without help.

All my life, there are only sentient beings in my heart, and the monks of compassion and charity are destined. In this way, with a strange smell, I left with ease.

Pan changed the telegram sent to Zhang Miaoshou to: "I died in the early morning, come quickly!" " Tell Changshun to send it to the county quickly.

Zhang Miaoshou, come quickly! Where are you at this critical moment?

At this point, Zhang Miaoshou has got on the speeding car!

It turned out that 1992, 16 in the afternoon of April, Zhang Miaoshou received this urgent telegram, and he was shocked after reading it.

I thought: How can I be someone else's successor? However, if you don't want to, you are afraid of being sorry for his old man's house.

(199 1 year, the master wrote to Zhang Miaoshou: "I observe that you are quite knowledgeable and should take over the inheritance of the 42nd generation of Lin Jizong." )

17 At 3 pm, Zhang Miaoshou walked into Master's cabin and felt very sad. He immediately knelt in front of the teacher, prostrating himself before him.

Many laymen in Lezhi County, this is the first time to see Master Zhang Miaoshou mentioned many times last night-take a closer look:

Ah! This face, this head, this style, how like your own master! Just wearing a blue khaki tunic suit with buttons neatly buttoned under his neck, he is indeed a virtuous, educated, knowledgeable and handsome man. If you shave, put on a robe and a cassock, you will be more like our master!

Everyone showed respect and great hope for Master's long-awaited successor.

At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the successor designated by the outgoing master was immediately shaved, and Master ChangZhen, the new abbot of Guobao Temple, was immediately dressed in cassock.

As soon as he became a monk, he immediately became the abbot of a famous temple, which is a rare page in the history of Buddhism in China!

At this time, Master ChangZhen was determined to follow the example of his former mentor and devote himself to the cause of Buddhism.

At 8: 00 am on February 26th, 65438, the old mage Chang Zhen passed away.

Explain the five precepts

Master ChangZhen explained.

Four of the five commandments are fundamental. Further talk about the significance of the Five Commandments and the problems that should be paid attention to in real life.

No killing.

The main purpose of not killing is to cultivate our compassion. The key to this problem is to cultivate children. Everyone has children. As parents, we should consciously instill in our children the idea of caring for students and caring for small animals when they are very young. But many families ignore this kind of initial education. Two years ago, a lay man came to the temple with her junior high school son. She told me that one day her son came home from school and told her a puzzling thing. The teacher evaluates the composition in class. A female classmate's essay topic is "My mother taught me to kill chickens", which is about how her mother taught her to kill chickens. This paper describes in detail her series of psychological activities: from the initial fear of killing the chicken half to death, how the chicken eager for death broke free from people's hands, running on the ground covered in blood and screaming, to fear and timidity, and then under the guidance of her mother, she gradually learned the "skill" of killing the chicken with one knife, which made her more and more courageous to kill the chicken. On this basis, he gradually learned not only to dare to kill chickens, but also to cut off eels, which was praised by many people and asked her to kill chickens for him. The son of a layman can't understand why his classmate's mother taught her daughter to do such cruel and terrible bloody things. It is not difficult to see the innocence and loveliness of children. They are a blank sheet of paper with great plasticity. The key lies in how parents can be role models for their children and how to guide and educate your children. Why not cultivate her love and compassion, and cultivate the cruelty of children? I have learned to kill chickens, ducks and eels since I was a child. Under the guidance of parents, children's young hearts, initially precious compassion, gradually disappeared, and compassion gradually disappeared, replaced by cruelty and belligerence. What a sad thing it is! With the growth of age, when personal interests conflict with other people's interests and social interests, killing people for personal interests will be as easy as killing chickens and ducks, or even killing parents as chickens and ducks. This is no joke. Two years ago, there was a news in the newspaper: two couples were professors at a university in Nanjing, but they were killed by their doting biological sons. They trained an executioner to send himself to the grave! Another reporter said in an article that there is a new type of children's toy. Press the button and all kinds of modern weapons will be displayed to fight the enemy. The reporter saw a child playing with that kind of toy and asked, "Which of these weapons do you like?" The child replied, "I like knives." "The reporter asked again," Why? Knife is the most primitive weapon? " The child actually replied, "I like knives. It's fun to cut off my head and watch it bleed! " "What a terrible idea. What we parents do is worth pondering. What kind of people are we training? This is training Hitler and the executioner! Aren't we parents responsible for such children? ! The bad news of killing is the most serious, and the bad news of collecting flowers (just blooming, not yet bearing fruit) is that the life is short; The reward is to pay in hell after death.

Second, do not steal.

This commandment was originally called "don't take it", that is, if someone doesn't give it to you, no matter what means you take it, it's called stealing. This is the fundamental view of wealth in Buddhism. Stealing is bound to be rewarded by poverty; The cause of planting alms is bound to be rewarded by wealth. Nie Yuntai, Zeng Guofan's grandson, learned Chinese and Western. Before liberation, he was the president of Shanghai Chamber of Commerce. He wrote a book called "The Law to Protect the Rich". Believing in Buddhism after middle age, he cited a large number of examples from the Buddhist point of view to illustrate how to make a fortune and how to keep it. Everyone in the society wants to get rich, but they don't know how to get rich. How should you seek wealth in a rational way? We don't mean that you can't make a fortune, the key is how to use your wealth after you make a fortune. If you get rich just for personal enjoyment and spend a lot of money, but you don't know how to repay the society and do something good for it, then you are committing sin. You use part of your wealth to do something good for the society, which is in the Fu Pei newspaper. Therefore, whether there is wealth is a blessing; Will you use wealth? This is wisdom.

Three-no adultery

For the current social atmosphere, this commandment is quite worthy of attention. As Buddhists, we must understand that lust is the root of life and death. To think of reincarnation, the key problem is to close the door of life and death, which is an important guarantee for our future life and death, reincarnation and living in pure land.

Four don't lie.

What is particularly emphasized in the lie circle is the big lie. There are many people who don't believe in cause and effect and let themselves talk nonsense, saying that they are enlightened and know the past and the future. This is a great cause! We must be careful not to be cheated. How do we identify the standard of authenticity? The master of Xuanhua in Wanfo City once said: No matter how lively a person is, as long as we look at his attitude in front of money, it is not difficult to see whether he said that he was enlightened or not.

Five don't drink.

The precept of not drinking alcohol is not a fundamental precept, but we should still attach great importance to it, which is of great benefit to our physical and mental purity. If you can observe the five commandments, you can prevent evil, and it is not difficult to pursue ten good deeds on this basis. The precept is to stop us from doing it, and when we do it, we will break it. It is absolutely wrong to ask us to do ten good things, which is very positive. As long as we can seriously abide by the five precepts and actively pursue the ten virtues, this is the program of man and nature, which lays a good foundation for us to be human beings. Only on this basis can we talk about the cycle of life and death. So don't think it's easy to follow the five commandments. This is the starting point of practicing the Dharma and the foundation of practicing Bodhisattva.

Classic interpretation of ten good deeds

Let's first introduce the contents of the Ten Kindness, focusing on issues related to our current practice.

first

Nursing students: by extension, we should do more social welfare undertakings such as saving lives, respecting the elderly and caring for the young, helping the poor, rescuing people in emergency, mediating disputes and so on to maintain social peace. As Buddhists, we should all have the courage to undertake such things that are beneficial to society. This is a practicing bodhisattva. For example, in the summer of 1998, three young people gave their lives to save people in Funan River in Chengdu, but it caused various discussions. Many people praised their courageous behavior, which is worth promoting. Some people regret that it is not cost-effective to sacrifice so young! There are still some people who think that such a courageous thing is impossible! From the Buddhist point of view, to be able to sacrifice oneself to save others is to practice bodhisattva. In the past, when Buddhists were practicing bodhisattva, there were countless examples of giving up the leader's brain in order to save all beings. We ordinary people can make this wish, of course, we can eliminate our evil obstacles, increase our wisdom and improve our realm. It is recorded in Buddhist scriptures that a woman crossed the river with her child in her arms and accidentally dropped the child into the river. The woman was very sad at that time and desperately jumped into the water to save the child. Her idea is to save the child, who is one of the sentient beings, so she died and was born in heaven. We infer from this case that although these three young people are dead, they will certainly have a good life in the next life. There is nothing wrong with pushing the fruit from the cause.

second

The purpose of stealing is to get wealth, but thieves don't know that this evil cause is planted, and the result is poverty and hardship. On the other hand, only by planting good karma can we get rich blessings. From the analysis of causality, we use wealth to give, and it is the giver, not the receiver, who gets the benefit. This is just the opposite of the general view in society. Because the blessings enjoyed by the giver in his life will never be reduced by his giving. For example, a person who should be a millionaire donates 500 thousand, and his final wealth will not decrease. Just like a well, the well water is pumped out, but it will return to its original water level in a few days. In other words, one should have as many blessings as possible. This part of the wealth given away is equivalent to being deposited in the giving bank, which is the safest bank with the highest interest rate. According to the Tibetan scriptures, this is called "giving one thing, you get a million dollars", which is what people often say "a book gets a million dollars". Those who accept charity are also good karma planted in previous lives and will get good results. However, after you get the donation, the blessing will be written off. From this perspective, accepting charity is not necessarily a good thing. The Buddhist community in Taizhou once released a message: "1990, a large-scale construction was held in Guanghua Temple in Putian, Fujian Province, and some Indonesian Chinese businessmen came to the temple to burn incense and donated a lot of money. After returning to Indonesia, their business was very smooth. After the news spread, more and more people gave alms. Finally, I made a general ledger. The total amount of these Indonesian Chinese to the reconstruction project of Guanghua Temple is as high as more than 10 million yuan. They draw a conclusion from this: the more you pay, the more you get, and the more you pay, the more you get. The second example is: 199 1 When Zhejiang Xinchang Giant Buddha was rebuilt, there was a Hong Kong businessman named Huang Zunxiang. He dreamed of the Buddha in his dream, so he came to this temple to worship Buddha and donated 10 thousand yuan. After returning to Hong Kong, his business was very smooth and his confidence increased greatly. Later, I went to the temple to donate money many times. After each donation, I feel that the company's profits are bigger every time, and my confidence is doubled. The total amount of personal donations is as high as more than one million yuan. Later, he became the general manager of three companies in Hong Kong. These examples can show that people who pay will benefit and pay will never lose money.

essay

Practice Sanskrit instead of committing lewdness.

Sanskrit is pure life. Except husband and wife, a head of household must never have sexual relations with men and women. This is immoral behavior, and it is also an evil behavior that destroys other people's family relations, and it is bound to be culpable of punishment. First of all, we Buddhists should abstain from sex, practice precepts seriously, use Buddhism to guide our lives, turn our family into a clean Dojo, treat our relatives as legal relatives, and all of us study together in Tomi, so that we can live together in a pure land in the future. In this way, such a family is truly happy and complete.

Article 4

Tell the truth, not lie.

Some people in the society say that fake jobs have become a trend, and it is said that they are afraid of telling the truth and suffering. In fact, people who tell lies can be cheated by you for a period of time at most, but not for a long time. Once a lie is exposed, this person's reputation and belief are completely gone. Never learn Buddhism. No matter what industry you are engaged in, you should work and live with honesty and treat others with honesty. This is a good cause. Beijing Tongrentang is a good example of seeking development with honesty. His boss, surnamed Le, has been engaged in medicinal materials business since the Qing Dynasty. He always believes that doing business must be based on honesty, especially the medical business, which is to directly treat patients and save lives and do good deeds. Therefore, Tongrentang's medicine should first ensure the quality and never be adulterated. The curative effect of this drug can achieve the goal of getting rid of diseases, which is deeply trusted by people. For example, some Chinese patent medicines are made of gold, and he will definitely use gold seriously and never discount it. Even when they are in urgent need, they take out their gold jewelry and use it. Many of his relatives and friends don't understand this, saying how can business be like this? The advertisement said that there was gold in the medicine, but the buyer was not there. You will lose if you are so serious! However, the ancestors of Tongrentang had a completely different view. He thinks that everything he does is actually a career. How can he lose money by planting good causes? How can I get what you deserve? Sure enough, he did it completely right. Although his medicine cost is high and the price is more expensive than others, it is genuine and effective, and won the trust of users. No drugstore can compare with him. Beijing Tongrentang has a history of more than 200 years and enjoys a high reputation so far. Obviously, telling the truth and not lying won't pay off.

Article 5

Speak softly, not swearing.

We who study Buddhism should be merciful. One of the four photos of Bodhisattva Xing is called Love Language Photo. Love words mean speaking kindly, using a language that people are willing to accept, so as to make good relations and get respect from others.

Article 6

There is no word in interlanguage.

In interpersonal relationships, when there are contradictions between others, never create disputes between the two sides, but intensify the contradictions. And we can only use good words to mediate and help others solve problems. This is a good marriage. More good relationships are very beneficial to people and themselves, especially laymen who have been protected by Bodhisattva. Don't say four mistakes, because the amulet of Youpo Saijie Sutra lists saying four mistakes as a heavy warning. We often break this commandment in casual chat, which is very unfavorable to our own practice.

Article 7

Don't speak English, speak simple and honest language.

Yee language is rhetoric, not proper language. People who study Buddhism should understand that the straight heart is the Dojo. We should be honest with each other and speak frankly. This is the true nature of Buddhists. If you cheat others with sweet words, or pollute others' hearts with yellow and obscene language, it is very inappropriate. And this evil cause is bound to be rewarded accordingly.

Article 8

Don't be insatiable and cultivate an impure view.

From this article to article 10, it is toxic to greed, anger and stupidity. Greed mainly refers to wealth, sex, fame, food and sleep, which is a big obstacle for everyone to learn Buddhism. If this problem is not solved, it will be difficult to learn Buddhism.

The first is the greed for money.

. The average person's pursuit and desire for wealth is endless, and there will never be a day of satisfaction. Greed is the most appropriate description. Therefore, you can always try to seek wealth by hook or by crook. When you get wealth, you can squander it and enjoy it. Not only that, but also unwilling to return wealth to society, and even more unwilling to do some beneficial good things for society. In this way, once bad karma is planted, it will surely get bad karma. It is true that "the greedy husband is greedy for money".

The second is lust.

This is a question of whether we can live or die. If you plant evil reasons, you will get bad results. You have planted evil causes that destroy other people's families and social atmosphere. You and your relatives will be punished by evil, and you will also destroy your own family. This is a very realistic evil report. This kind of bad influence will make future generations suffer extremely bad harm and cause bad news, which is very terrible. As Buddhists, we should set an example in improving moral quality and purifying social atmosphere.

The third is greed for fame and fortune.

Name, originally an abstract concept, has no substance, but it is always hard to let go. In fact, the root of greed for fame and fortune lies in "self-reliance." One person said, "I learned Buddhism and achieved' no self'. When I donated merit to the temple, I never wrote a name, only wrote an' anonymous'. " One day, he came to the temple and looked at the merit tablet carefully. He saw that "Anonymous" donated the most money. He was very satisfied, and he was afraid that no one would know, so he asked others, "Do you know who this anonymous person is?" Because many people know that his nickname is "anonymous", but they deliberately say they don't know. He couldn't wait to say, "That's me!" Everyone praised him a lot, and he was on cloud nine, and his mind was fully satisfied, that's all. It can be seen that although it is not worthy of the name, it does harm people. People are prone to delusion, separation and persistence. If we don't make our "name" clear and break our "self", then this delusion, separation and persistence will always disturb our spiritual practice. Although we have planted some good causes, we have made "self-obsession" heavier, so we can't get out of the six divisions in the wheel of karma.

The fourth is gluttony.

How should Buddhists view diet? Diet is used to alleviate hunger and maintain life, without higher requirements. However, many people are insatiable in diet, and make in-depth research on the color, smell and taste of food. Even the delicacies are tired of eating, and ants and snails are listed as top-grade delicacies. In order to enjoy the so-called "delicious food", I do not hesitate to kill many lives, spend countless money, waste precious time, cause all kinds of evils and create all kinds of diseases for myself. According to medical journals, the three diseases with the highest mortality rate in China in recent twenty years are cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and cancer. These three diseases have the highest mortality rate in western countries, and we have caught up with them in just over 20 years. The medical science circles in some western countries have found that the root cause of this kind of disease lies in excessive intake of high fat and high protein. Studying and advocating "vegetarianism" is to prevent diseases and solve the problem of which foods will kill people. Through scientific chemical analysis and testing, they found that the nutritional composition and value of vegetarian food are not as high as meat food, but only stressed that vegetarian food must be accompanied by hard-shelled fruits such as peanuts and walnuts, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. From the Buddhist point of view, if you can be a vegetarian, stop killing and set free, you will get the fruits of health and longevity. Of course, we Buddhists are not pursuing health and longevity, because this is not the purpose of learning Buddhism, and health and longevity are only by-products of learning Buddhism. As long as we study Buddhism seriously and have a clean mind and body, we will certainly live a long and healthy life.

The fifth is a nap.

People who study Buddhism and society have different views on this issue. Of course, Buddhists need sleep. Sleep can regulate physical fatigue, make the body rest, restore physical strength and be full of energy. However, if you sleep too much, it will make you dizzy and tired. If you get into the habit of dozing off, it seems that you will never get enough sleep, and you will be listless and lazy. True practitioners control their sleep and work hard on the Tao. Abstinence from sleep is absolutely harmless to your health. Monks in the city of ten thousand buddhas in the United States practice for a day and don't pay at night. In fact, as long as our hearts are clean, even if we don't have much sleep time, the quality of sleep can be improved and fatigue and energy can be restored. The abbot of Zhaojue Temple decided to be a guru. For a long time, he only slept for two hours every night, but people in their nineties were ruddy, radiant and full of energy! Just from the health status, can those who eat raw seafood, chicken, duck and fish every day compare with him? Therefore, less sleep and light diet will never affect health.

The above greed is to satisfy the body. You know, our bodies are a gathering place for evil. The Buddhist scriptures say, "Form is sin". Mi is the gathering point, and the popular point is the trash can, a trash can that creates evil at any time. In order to care for this body, all kinds of sins have been created. We are lucky enough to smell the breath of Buddhism, and it is not easy to know people, so we should use it to cultivate happiness and do things that are beneficial to people, and never create evil for it. Understand this truth, we will fight against all kinds of greed anytime and anywhere, and then we will reduce the evil created in this respect. All of the above are about how to treat greed, and the next one is about how to treat anger.

Article 9

Cultivate the concept of compassion without anger

Anger is also the most difficult to treat. Hatred and jealousy are very harmful! In all interpersonal relationships, there is hatred and jealousy, which will lead to family discord, friction and conflict between people in society and the surrounding environment; In the final analysis, it can lead to wars between countries and human slaughter, all of which are related to anger. Buddhism teaches us to practice paramita, which is an important method specially used to treat anger. The humiliation advocated by Buddhism is completely different from the humiliation in society. The humiliation of Buddhism is based on the basic viewpoints of cause and effect and compassion, and viewed from three generations of cause and effect. Therefore, when we treat those who insult and hurt us for no reason, we should reciprocate with sympathy, so that we will be thought of and even willing to sacrifice ourselves. One of the best examples of Buddhism is that when King Goliath cut off the Buddha's arm, the Buddha's first thought was: If I become a Buddha, I will treat you first. How generous! Therefore, of course, we who study Buddhism should follow the example of Buddhism. When we meet someone who makes us embarrassed and embarrassed, we should consider it. He hasn't cut off my arm yet. If the Buddha's arm is cut off, he must first cut off his arm. If we're just embarrassed, what is it? If you think like this, your mind will be broadened and everything will be inclusive. It's never too late for a gentleman to take revenge for ten years. That's not expanding your chest, but burying your hatred in your heart and waiting for revenge. Historically, Gou Jian, the King of Yue, was considered to be very humiliated. In fact, from the perspective of Buddhism, this humiliation is a kind of revenge, which cannot be settled, and it is completely opposite to the humiliation of Buddhism.

Article 10

Cultivate the concept of karma without delusion

This stupidity does not mean that you have no cultural knowledge, but that you don't believe in the truth of life in the universe and the objective causal law that runs through three generations. If you don't know this, you can't tell right from wrong, good from evil, right from wrong, and do stupid things. Reference news once published: an American named Thomson, with personal assets as high as $200 million, was stingy by nature and penniless before his death. When he was terminally ill, he made a will and asked a lawyer to notarize it for him: he took out $200 million in assets from the bank, put it in a coffin, and then made a grave with reinforced concrete, and asked two security guards to guard it. There are such stupid people in the world! He just doesn't understand the typical cause and effect of III. Causally speaking, he planted stingy karma, and even if he is a human being in the next life, he will certainly be rewarded with poverty and hardship. Will he know where the grave of his previous life is after he is reborn? It is out of the question. There are huge dollars in the grave, so it is impossible to keep them. The emperor of China is the cleverest. He often used a mountain as his tomb, but kept several emperors' tombs. The above are some basic contents of the Ten Kindnesses, which are closely related to everyone's daily work and life, and are the guidelines that the Buddha asked us to abide by. Since we learn Buddhism, we must use Buddhism to guide our life, that is, we must follow the teachings of Buddhism and take a happy and complete life path that benefits all beings and society and cultivates happiness and wisdom. Therefore, we must be a person who believes in cause and effect, abides by precepts, does all kinds of evil and pursues all kinds of good, and then lives in pure land by chanting Buddha's words. There is no amitabha in the south.

documentary

The story from the county magistrate to the monk Master ChangZhen.

This film tells the story of Master ChangZhen from county magistrate to monk. Master ChangZhen advocated human Buddhism and spread the world with the spirit of Buddhist compassion.
