What is the history of the Great Buddha Temple in Zhangye?
Zhangye Buddhist Temple is famous for having the largest reclining Buddha in China. The Great Buddha Temple was built in the first year of Chongzong Yong 'an in Xixia (1098). According to legend, a monk named Cui Miao swam here, and one day he suddenly heard the sound of silk and bamboo floating in the air, and went away, but no one was playing. He suspected it was a paradise. So, I dug down the place where Tianle rose and got a jade reclining Buddha, so I built the Great Buddha Temple here. The Buddhist temple was originally named Ye Jia Niolet Ji, also known as Baojue Temple and Hong Ren Temple, commonly known as the Big Buddha Temple or the Reclining Buddha Temple. The reclining Buddha in the temple is 34.5 meters in length, 7.5 meters in shoulder width, 4 meters in foot length and more than 2 meters in one ear. Wooden tires are made of clay and painted with gold. The statue has a natural posture, soft and full lines and moderate proportions. His face is quiet and laid-back, his eyes are half open and half closed, he seems to be asleep, and his mouth is always smiling, giving the impression that if he wakes up, he will wake up with a scream. This huge reclining Buddha has been visited by travelers Kyle Poirot and Shaharu's special envoy, and heard the voice of Queen Mother Xixia chanting here. He smiled at the birth of Kublai Khan, the founding king of Dayuan Empire, and lamented that Zhao Xian, the king of national subjugation in the Southern Song Dynasty, had his hair cut as a monk here. Legend has it that Zhao Xian married a Hui woman and gave birth to a boy when he became a monk in the Big Buddha Temple. He was adopted by Yuan Mingzong as his son and later succeeded to the throne in the name of Yuan Shundi. This happened on 1333.
