French Architecture in Baiwa City: Historical Witness
The French stayed in Zhanjiang for 45 years. There are many western-style buildings left by the French along Xiashan Haibin Road, mainly including the French Civil Servant Building, Verdo Catholic Church, Gospel Hall, Credit Suisse Bank and so on. These buildings are all reinforced concrete houses, reflecting the popular architectural style in France at that time and full of rich cultural atmosphere. For example:

Xiashan Catholic Church: Located at the approach of Xiashan Road, also known as Victoria Catholic Church, it is tall and solemn, surrounded by flowers and trees. It is the only Gothic church in Zhanjiang and one of the national key churches.

After Fadi invaded Zhanjiang, Catholicism followed. 1900 French priest Lan Fan proposed to build a church while he was in charge of the educational administration in Zhanjiang, and the church funded it 1903.

Masonry reinforced concrete structure, double-pointed stone tower, construction area of about 600 square meters, the hall can accommodate nearly dry people, was the largest Gothic church in South China at that time. 199 1 is listed as the key cultural relics protection unit of the city.

Former site of French Agricultural Credit Bank: located at the intersection of Zhi Min Road and Yan 'an Road in Xiashan, it was originally a French commercial bank, which was listed on 1926 and was the earliest bank in Zhanjiang. The currency circulation in Guangzhou Bay occupied by France is a bit special. 1926, the French "Agricultural Credit Bank" set up a branch in Xiying (now Xiashan) of Guangzhou Bay (this is the first modern bank in Guangzhou Bay).

Credit Suisse Oriental Company issued currency in French colonies on behalf of the French government. At that time, Vietnamese banknotes were used to cash French trade silver dollars. Residents of Guangzhou Bay call it "Annan Paper", "Saigon Paper" or "Western Currency". Vietnamese banknotes issued by the French "Oriental Credit Suisse Bank" became the official currency of Guangzhou Bay.

Xiashan Gospel Church: Located at No.4 Yan 'an Road, xiashan district, Zhanjiang City, it is a place for Christians to conduct religious activities in Zhanjiang City.

It was built in the Republic of China 14-25 (1925- 1936) for American Christian pastor Schiller. There are two rooms in the chapel and kindergarten, a missionary living hall and a baptist pool next to the hall.

The Gospel Church was originally named "Baptist Gospel Church", and the auxiliary church is a kindergarten, with a total area of 247 square meters and a height of 9 meters. Churches are divided into chapels and baptist pools.

Former site of Guangzhou Bay Police Station in France: It is located in Yan 'an Road, Xiashan, in the courtyard of Xiashan Public Security Bureau, across the street from the French Embassy in Guangzhou Bay. After France invaded Zhanjiang, in order to maintain its colonial rule, the police station was set up immediately, and the office building began at 1900. The two-story building, with an area of 400 square meters, is of masonry structure, with a wide balcony in front of the entrance hall, and its appearance is solemn. It is the earliest building among the French architectural relics in Zhanjiang.

The former site of Guangzhou Bay Command of French Army is the earliest French architectural relic in Zhanjiang. Now it is the office building of Xiashan Public Security Bureau.

Chikan used to have four watchtowers and watchtowers. At present, a building on Xinjing Road is accused of being a watchtower during the French colonial period.

The buildings of these French colonies are the historical witness of China's French aggression and the symbol of a city. In recent years, Zhanjiang City has given necessary protection to these French buildings. Some buildings in France are listed as municipal cultural relics protection units, and some buildings are still in use and play a certain role.
