As early as the ninth year of Jian 'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty (in 204), it took three years for Cao Cao, Emperor Wu of Wei, to rule Hebei and crusade against Wuhuan. First, the famous white ditch in history was dug, which enabled the canals in the north and south of the Yellow River to be connected. Since then, the Pinglu Canal has been dug northward (both ditches and canals are ancient names of canals), so that this north-south canal extends to the unique flow direction of Tianjin Jinghai and is connected with Haihe River. While digging the Pinglu Canal, another canal was dug from Youzhou (now Beijing) to Tianjin. This canal and Pinglu Canal will be connected in quanzhou county (formerly known as Wuqing) and named Quanzhou Canal. In the seventh year of Yuan Dynasty (1270), Kublai Khan of Yuan Shizu adopted the inscription of Guo Shoujing, the governor of water conservancy, and called more than 2.5 million yuan in tribute. At the waist of the Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty, more than 250 miles of canals were dug on the ground. This section of the river starts from Jeju in the south and ends in Linqing in the north. By cutting and straightening, the original river course was shortened by more than 700 miles at once, and was named Huitong River by Yuan Shizu. In the 13th year of Zhiyuan (1276), Guo Shoujing proposed to abandon Yongji Canal and use Luhe Waterway from Tongzhou to Tianjin. Yuan Shizu made a small change and ordered the construction. This section of the river is now the North Canal. It takes a straight ditch from Sunjiawu in the west of Xianghe River, passes through Hexi, Mengcun, Caicun and Yangcun, and still takes barnyard grass ditch to the south and pours into Tianjin Haihe River. After it was completed in the 17th year of Yuan Dynasty (1280), it was still called Luhe, and it was renamed North Canal at the end of Ming Dynasty. In the 29th year of Yuan Dynasty (1292), Yuan Shizu adopted Guo Shoujing's suggestion and dug a grain river from Tongzhou to Gyeonggi. The campaign lasted more than a year and employed more than 2.8 million people. Through the above three major projects, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal has been reduced to more than 3,500 miles, and the veritable Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal has been formally finalized.
