The name comes from Jinan, "Ji" refers to Jishui (commonly known as Daqing River), and "South" refers to the south. As a word, it means south of Jishui, which is a geographical place name. The ancient Jishui (Yin Ji, Sansheng) originated in Jiyuan City, Henan Province, and the basin is roughly equivalent to the Shandong section of the Yellow River.
