The gloomy picture depicted in Madam President is bound to cause some shock. As soon as the novel came out, some people published articles, denying it from content to form, syntax to language, accusing it of being a copy of Madame Bovary. The President's Wife was criticized. Obviously, the problem is not the story itself, but the author's seemingly indifferent attitude, which describes the cause and effect of this tragedy very objectively, thus embarrassing some gentlemen. Therefore, they always try their best to denigrate and belittle this work. Once the value of The President's Wife is confirmed, its criticism will become a historical relic. Spanish literary circles have listed it with Don Quixote by Cervantes (16 15) and Fortunata and Jesuita by Pérez Galdós (1887) as three major novels in Spain. Such a high evaluation is fair.
Clarin is also an excellent literary critic. He insisted on using accurate and appropriate standards to comment on literary works. Because of his sharp and profound criticism, he is known as a moral model in Spanish literary criticism. All Clarin's creations and comments are based on advocating progress, opposing conservatism, praising light and attacking darkness, which profoundly reveals the inevitable result of the demise of feudal nobles. He really became the "horn" for Spain's new bourgeoisie to charge the feudal conservative forces.
