If you call yourself, it is generally called "the present dynasty", and if you call yourself the former dynasty, it is generally called "the former dynasty".

If it's farther, it's called a specific name.

For example, the Qing dynasty called itself "the present dynasty", and the Ming dynasty called itself "the former dynasty" or "the former Ming dynasty", which is the same as what we do today.
