National historical and cultural cities are determined and announced by People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council. It is 1982 a cultural relic protection institution proposed by Peking University, Zheng of the Ministry of Construction and Shan Shiyuan of the Palace Museum. The cities listed in the list are all cities that are particularly rich in preserved cultural relics, have great historical value or commemorative significance, and are continuing to use. At present, China has announced 103 national historical and cultural cities.

China's historical and cultural cities are mainly divided into seven categories according to the characteristics of each city, namely

Ancient capital type: characterized by historical relics of the capital era and the ancient capital style, such as Beijing and Xi' an;

Traditional style: cities that retain complete buildings accumulated in one or several historical periods, such as Pingyao and Hancheng;

Scenic spot type: a city with distinctive personality characteristics formed by the superposition of architecture and landscape environment, such as Guilin and Suzhou;

Local and ethnic characteristics: cities with regional or individual characteristics, ethnic customs and local culture, such as Lijiang and Lhasa;

Modern historical relics: Shanghai, Zunyi and other cities with distinctive characteristics that reflect an event or a certain stage in history;

Special functional type: a certain function of a city occupies a very prominent position in history, such as "Yancheng" Zigong and "porcelain capital" Jingdezhen;

General types of historical sites: cities with cultural relics scattered all over the city as the main way to reflect historical traditions, such as Changsha and Jinan.
